Walk down the household aisle and there are forty bottles doing about five jobs. Once you know which of the five a product belongs to, most of the guesswork goes away, and so does the risk of using something that quietly ruins a surface or makes a gas you do not want in a closed bathroom.

How pH Actually Works

Nearly every cleaning product is either acidic, neutral or alkaline, and that one property decides most of what it can do. Acids dissolve mineral deposits. Alkalis break down fats and oils. Neutral products do neither particularly well, which is exactly why they are the safe choice on surfaces that cannot take either extreme.

Match the type, not the strength

Limescale is a mineral, so it needs an acid. Cooking oil is a fat, so it needs an alkali. Using the wrong type is not a weaker clean, it is no clean at all, and the usual response is to scrub harder and damage the surface instead.

Stronger is not better either. The further a product sits from neutral, the more it will do to the surface as well as to the dirt.

Degreasers and Kitchen Work

Alkaline products cover most of what a home needs. General purpose sprays sit mildly alkaline, kitchen degreasers sit further up, and the heavy duty products used on a range hood or a commercial kitchen sit further up again.

Malaysian kitchens work these harder than most. Daily cooking puts oil vapour into the air, and that vapour lands on the wall behind the hob, the underside of the cabinets, the ceiling above and the top of the fridge. It arrives as a film you can barely see and turns tacky, then hard.

Once it has hardened, a general spray will not touch it. It needs a proper degreaser, dwell time so the product can work, and then agitation. The dwell time is the part people skip, and it is doing most of the job.

The catch is that strong alkalis dull aluminium, mark some paints and are hard on skin. That is why they belong on a hob surround and not on a general wipe down.

Descalers and Hard Water

Acidic products handle the mineral side: limescale on taps and shower screens, the ring in a toilet bowl, and the white haze that comes back on glass a week after it was cleaned. Water here carries enough mineral content that this is a recurring job rather than a one off.

The two rules that matter are simple. Keep acids away from natural stone, because marble, limestone and terrazzo are calcium based and acid eats them. And keep the contact time short on metal fittings, because chrome and brass finishes do not enjoy sitting in it.

On a shower screen the mistake is usually not the product, it is expecting one pass to clear years of build up. Scale layers, so it comes off in layers.

Chlorine, Peroxide and Mould

Household bleach is sodium hypochlorite. It is very good at removing the colour from a stain and at killing what is on the surface, and it is much less good at anything structural. Mould on a silicone seal is the classic example: bleach takes the black out so the seal looks clean, while the growth inside the silicone is untouched and comes back within weeks.

Where mould has gone into silicone rather than sitting on it, replacing the seal is the real fix. We would rather tell you that than sell a result that lasts a month.

Hydrogen peroxide is the gentler alternative and is easier on colour and fabric, which is why it turns up in upholstery work more often than chlorine bleach does.

Two mixes to never make

Bleach with any acid, including toilet descalers and vinegar, releases chlorine gas. Bleach with ammonia, which is in many glass cleaners, releases chloramine. A closed bathroom with the fan off is the worst place for either. Rinse the surface and air the room before switching products.

Enzymes, Solvents and Fabric Work

Enzyme cleaners work differently from the rest. Instead of dissolving something, they break down specific organic material, which makes them the right tool for pet accidents, drains, and the smells that come back a day after a surface has been wiped. They need time and they do not like being mixed with bleach, which destroys them.

Solvents handle what water based products cannot touch: adhesive residue, marker, tape marks and the sticky remains of a renovation. They are effective and they are also the products most likely to damage a surface, so they get spot tested somewhere hidden first.

Fabric is the case where product choice matters most, because a sofa or a mattress cannot be rinsed the way a floor can. Anything left in the fibre stays there and attracts dirt back. That is why sofa cleaning and mattress cleaning are done with extraction rather than with a spray and a cloth.

What We Carry to a Normal Job

A crew arriving at a house is generally carrying a neutral cleaner for floors and general surfaces, an alkaline degreaser for the kitchen, an acidic descaler for wet areas and glass, a disinfectant, and a small number of specialist products for fabric and adhesive.

That is five categories rather than forty bottles, and it covers almost everything a home throws up. What changes between jobs is the strength within each category and how long the product is left to work.
