How Often Should You Deep Clean a Home in Malaysia?
Most advice on this is written for places with four seasons and dry winters. Here it is warm and humid all year, which changes both how fast a home gets dirty and what kind of dirty it gets. This is a realistic schedule for Malaysian homes, and an honest account of what regular upkeep does and does not prevent.

What This Covers
- Why the climate changes the answer
- A schedule by property type
- What upkeep in between covers
- The signs you have left it too long
Why the Answer Is Different Here
Two things drive it. The first is humidity. Sitting high most of the year, it gives mould and mildew a permanent opportunity on grout, silicone seals, window rubbers, wardrobe backs and anything stored against an external wall. In a dry climate those spots are a seasonal problem. Here they are a standing one.
The second is that there is no cold season to slow anything down. Dust does not stop, cooking oil vapour does not stop, and air-conditioners run for months without a break, quietly collecting dust in their filters and blowing a fine layer of it around the room.
Most cleaning schedules are written for climates with a dry winter that slows everything down. Here, humidity stays high, dust never pauses and air conditioners run for months, so the gap between a home looking fine and needing real work is shorter than the usual advice suggests.
A Realistic Rhythm by Property Type
These assume some routine upkeep in between. Without it, move each one earlier.
Condo or apartment, one or two people, no pets. Twice a year is usually enough, timed either side of the wetter months. Wet areas and the kitchen are what actually need the attention; the bedrooms rarely do.
Landed home, family, daily cooking. Every three to four months. More floor area, more bathrooms, a staircase, ceiling fans and a kitchen that produces oil vapour every day all add up faster than people expect.
Any home with pets or small children. Every three months, and pay attention to soft furnishings between times. Upholstery and mattresses hold what floors do not.
Rented units between tenants. Every changeover, without exception. This is not really about frequency; it is about the unit being handed over in a defensible state.
Units that sit empty for stretches. Before anyone moves back in. A closed-up home in this climate develops a smell and a film that a quick wipe does not fix.
What Regular Upkeep Actually Covers
Weekly or fortnightly cleaning keeps the surfaces you see in good order: floors, counters, bathrooms, dusting and the visible parts of the kitchen. That is genuinely most of the work, and a home on a standing schedule looks fine almost all of the time.
What it does not normally include is the slow-accumulation work. Descaling shower screens and taps, degreasing behind and above the hob, clearing the top of wardrobes and inside store rooms, washing window grilles, and getting into the gaps that only matter once a year.
That split is why the two work together rather than competing. Our house cleaning page covers routine visits and deep cleaning covers the heavier work. If you want to plan the upkeep side yourself, the free cleaning schedule generator builds a weekly rota around your rooms and household.
When you message us, the useful date is the last time the place had heavy work done: the last deep clean, the last renovation, or the last time the wardrobes were turned out. The date of the last routine visit tells us almost nothing about what is waiting behind the hob or on top of the cabinets, which is where the hours actually go.
Signs You Have Left It Too Long
Grout that has gone from grey to patchy dark, particularly in the corners of a shower. Once mould is established in grout it needs treating rather than scrubbing.
A kitchen where the surfaces feel faintly tacky rather than dusty. That is oil vapour, and it does not come off with a general-purpose spray.
A smell that returns a few hours after cleaning, usually from soft furnishings, a drain trap or an air-conditioner rather than from the surfaces you just wiped.
Ceiling fans that throw visible dust when you turn them on, and window grilles with a dark line along the top edge.
None of these mean anybody has been careless. They are all in the category of things routine cleaning is not meant to catch. If you are seeing two or three of them, the interval has stretched too far. Sofas and mattresses in particular are worth a look; our sofa cleaning and mattress cleaning pages explain what that involves.
Questions People Ask About Frequency
For a well-kept home with routine upkeep in between, twice a year is a reasonable rhythm. Without regular upkeep, or with pets, small children or a kitchen that cooks daily, most homes need it more often than that.
It does. Sustained humidity is what lets mould take hold on grout, window seals and anything stored against an external wall. A deep clean going into and coming out of the wetter months catches it before it spreads.
Usually yes, but less often. Weekly upkeep handles surfaces and floors. It does not normally include descaling wet areas, degreasing behind and above the kitchen, or turning out wardrobes and store rooms, which is where a deep clean earns its keep.
