Contractor punch-list confirmed done. No more drilling, sanding or touch-up painting to come. Otherwise new dust lands on everything you clean. Bulk debris removed by the contractor. Leftover tiles, plaster bags, cartons and offcuts are their rough clean, not yours. Chase this before they leave site. Power and water switched on. You need working lights, sockets for the vacuum and running taps for every wet step later. Aircon covers and protective film off. Peel plastic wrap from units and fittings, but keep the aircon off until dusting is done, so fine dust isn’t pulled into fresh filters. Delicate finishes protected. Mask new marble, timber veneer and soft-close hardware before any scraping or scrubbing starts nearby. Space ventilated. Open every window and door early. Disturbed dust needs somewhere to go besides back onto your surfaces.

Ceilings and cornices. Dry-dust plaster edges, corners and ceiling lines where sanding dust collects first. Fans and light fittings. Wipe fan blades, shades and recessed housings before you switch anything on and blow dust around the room. Walls wiped down. A dry microfibre pass lifts the powder film. Wet cloths smear fine dust into fresh paint instead. Built-ins dusted inside-out. Wardrobes, cabinets, shelves and drawers hold hidden sawdust from the carpentry work. Empty and wipe every level. Window tracks and grilles. Vacuum grit out of the runners before it grinds and scratches the frames when windows slide. Doors and frames. The tops of door frames and hinge recesses trap a surprising layer. Run a cloth along every ledge. Skirting boards. The ledge where every falling particle eventually lands. Dust the full run of every room. Switches, sockets and vents. Dust settles into the plates and slots. Wipe dry only, never with a wet cloth.

Kitchen degreased, cabinet interiors wiped. Installation dust coats shelves and drawers before you’ve cooked a single meal. Clean inside before stocking up. Bathrooms descaled, fittings polished. Cement splash and grout haze come off taps, tiles and shower screens with a proper descale. Adhesive and paint spots removed. Test your scraper or remover on a hidden corner first. Some finishes scratch or dull far more easily than others. Glass and mirrors cleaned. Dust the pane first, then use glass cleaner. Otherwise you grind grit across the surface. Floors scrubbed. A full wet scrub of every floor, room by room. This is why all the dry dusting had to come first. Grout lines brushed. Cement film sits in the recesses long after the tile faces look clean. A stiff brush gets it out. Balcony washed down. Outdoor areas catch the heaviest cutting debris and dust. Hose or mop them before it tracks back inside. Drains flushed and checked. Rinse construction sediment out of floor traps and sinks before it sets where you can’t reach it.

Second dust pass after 2–3 days. The finest dust stays airborne for days and resettles on cleaned surfaces. This pass is normal, not a sign you cleaned badly. Air the space daily. Keep cross-ventilation going between passes so the last suspended dust drifts out instead of down. Final floor mop. One clean mop once surfaces have stopped collecting film. The floor that stays clean is the real finish line. Filters and vents checked. Wipe aircon filters and exhaust vents that caught the early airborne dust before you run them daily. Walkthrough with your contractor. Log snags (paint misses, silicone gaps, scratched fittings) while the crew can still be called back. Furniture and boxes in. Move in only after the second pass. Otherwise you trap renovation dust under and behind everything you own.

Why the Second Dust Pass Matters

Sanding, drilling and cutting throw particles of very different sizes into the air. The heavy grit lands within hours. That’s what your first big clean removes. But the finest gypsum and cement dust is light enough to stay suspended, drifting on air currents for two to three days before it finally settles. That’s why a floor mopped spotless on day one can look filmed-over again by day three. It isn’t bad cleaning; it’s physics. Plan a lighter second pass a few days after the first, and only then move your furniture in.

Forgetting Tracks & Hinges

Window runners, sliding-door tracks and hinges collect grit that grinds every time they move. Vacuum them out early, or the scratching starts the week you move in.
